"I'm set free to find a new illusion" - Lou Reed
The gap between opinionated swill and quality presentation of facts is deceivingly narrow, and somewhere in that deep, murky chasm resides myself. The only credit I have as a journalist is 3/4 of a year of college and a handful of articles in the school paper. What I do have, and what many who claim to be journalists in this world lack, is an abundance of Journalistic Integrity* and a self-imposed obligation to write the truth (as I've come to know it, if that's possible), because YOU, the Reader, have the right to know the truth.
You could argue in circles all day for eternity about the nuances of truth and reality and biases, but you don't actually care about that right? And I didn't start this magazine to write masturbatory thinkpieces. I'm here because I love art and I love writing, and I'm not really good at anything else.
Being that Bloodhound is a one-man gig (presently), I feel it's appropriate to grace you with a relevant introduction of myself, so I'm giving you a "First Day of School" rundown of me, Andersen Beck.
Favorite color?
Forest Green, like the factory Porsche color. Very sexy.
Top Favorite Band?
Pavement has comfortably sat at the top for me for going on three years.
Favorite Artist (music)?
Very mood dependent, but it's a four-way tie between Townes Van Zandt, Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters, Sun Kil Moon), Stephen Malkmus (Pavement, The Hard Quartet, Silver Jews, Ectoslavia (<-- ELITE BALL KNOWLEDGE)), and of course, Bob Dylan.
Favorite Artist (Fine Art)?
Though I'm a fanboy of Impressionism and love Monet, Signac, Renoit, etc, I think my favorite artist is probably Edward Hopper. I identify a lot with the man in the painting Four Lane Road.
Top Albums?
(order subject to change)
Self-titled - Stephen Malkmus
Highway 61 Revisited - Bob Dylan
Self-titled - Townes Van Zandt
The Heart of Saturday Night - Tom Waits
Recorded Fall '61 - Stan Getz, Bob Brookmeyer
Terror Twilight - Pavement
Odessey and Oracle - The Zombies
Power Corruption and Lies - New Order
Blue Rev - Alvvays
Blood and Chocolate - Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Favorite "up-and-coming" Band?
I'm watching Geese very closely right now. I think lead singer Cameron Winter has this spark that no other band right now has, they've been on a great tear with creative and experimental melodies. I saw them in 2022 when they opened for Jack White and they were spectacular. Looking very forward to seeing them with Vampire Weekend in June.
Favorite Movie?
Without a doubt, Wes Anderson's 1998 masterpiece Rushmore. I will simply not hear criticism about it. I'm no cinephile, movies really don't mean a whole lot to me and I have some harsh takes on film as an art form, but I still know amazing work when I see it and Rushmore is a special piece.
Favorite Music Genre?
Jazz. It's everything. I won't get into it.
Favorite Food?
Coors Banquet
That's all for now, I figure most of these details are relatively pertinent to this publication and they might help you see where I'm coming from in my writing. Thanks for reading, I actually do appreciate it. Now watch me pin accolades to myself like a North Korean general.
